I really wanted to have my own half size mannequin to photograph the half-size underpinnings we made at Uni, but they are quite expensive to buy.. so could I make one?
The answer was a resounding ‘yes’!
First of all, a huge ‘thank-you’ goes to an Etsy account called “GrowYourOwnClothes’ for a simple pattern and really easy instructions to follow.
“You bought a pattern??” I hear you all cry! Well yes, why sweat it when someone else has done the thinking for you.? I purchased and downloaded the pattern and popped along to my local fabric shop – ‘Rolls and Rems’ in Lewisham – and chose some pretty fabric in pale mint green… goodness, it’s so difficult to choose another colour when you have a green obsession!
The instructions recommended making a stand, using dowelling, and then gave directions for the cardboard base – but I like to take the easy route where possible, so I headed over to Wilko and bought a mug tree! (I wasn’t sure these were still a ‘thing’ but lucky me!) The ‘prongs’ unscrew so I removed the bottom 4 and left the top 2 so I had something to rest the mannequin on to stop it slipping down.
The fabric for the mannequin needed to be interfaced before you cut the pattern pieces, so I followed the instructions carefully and it all went together very easily. The stuffing I bought was a piece of white fleece blanket which made the ‘core’ of the body and then I added cut up pieces mixed with some polyester stuffing I had kapok stuffing from an old cushion to fill in around the core.
The instructions suggest you glue two pieces of card together to put into the neck and armholes to keep them stable and this worked perfectly from a sturdy corrugated box.
Then all I had to do was turn the whole thing upside down and push the core roll inside and then stuff the loose stuffing around it. You do need to take care to stuff it really well so it’s very solid. The last thing was to add the mug tree into the base and stuff around that and then close it up using the drawstring added during making.
I’m so, so happy with it and my half size underwear looks fantastic displayed on it..
